"1913 Armory Show"

2014 by James R. Huntsberger.   All rights reserved.

The 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known as the Armory Show, was the most important art show in American history.  It was assembled by a small group of artists who were dissatisfied with the National Academy of Design, which had dominated and shaped the careers of American artists.

The show was held in Manhattan's 69th Regimental Armory and introduced astonished Americans, who were accustomed to realistic art, to the experimental styles of the European vanguard.  The show ran from February 17 through March 15, 1913 and displayed 1,300 works by artists including works by Matisse, Picasso, Duchamp and Brancusi - whose art is included in my painting.

More than 90,000 visitors viewed the exhibit in New York before it moved to Chicago and Boston where even larger crowds were drawn by the publicity the Manhattan show had engendered.
